Last month's heavy rains in East Tennessee caused widespread localized flooding, but Norris Dam helped prevent even greater damage. According to WVLT, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) credited the dam with saving over $89 million in potential flood damage.

WATE reported that Norris Dam stored more than 20 feet of excess water in Norris Lake, reducing the flooding impacts downstream. Without the dam, TVA suggests that the Clinch River could have risen 17.6 feet above normal, flooding roads in Hancock County, as reported by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in February.

The flooding came alongside heavy rains and strong winds that left nearly 25,000 homes without power on February 16, as WIVK noted. Despite the damage, the dam's water management helped reduce the severity of the situation.

The flooding caused tragic loss of life in Eastern Kentucky, with 24 people dying from the floods. In response, WVLT's sister station, WYMT, is hosting the Appalachia Rising Above Flood Relief Concert Telethon to support those affected.
