Jim Zullo's long career as a high school basketball coach ended not with a game-winning shot, but with a hair-pulling incident that has shocked the community. After his team's loss in the Class D state championship, Zullo was captured on video physically reprimanding player Hailey Monroe, leading to his swift termination from Northville Central School.

According to CBS News New York, the ousting came shortly after footage surfaced of Zullo pulling Monroe's ponytail postgame, an action he later described as "unacceptable." Notably, the team was in the throes of a postgame ceremony, where the irony of fair play meets unfortunate conduct, an awards presentation in the gym at Hudson Valley Community College. The video led to an outcry from the public and demands for the coach's accountability.

Following the incident, Zullo issued an apology yesterday, underscoring his regret. "I deeply regret my behavior following the loss to La Fargeville Friday night in the Class D state championship game," Zullo stated, as reported by CBS News New York. "I want to offer my sincerest apologies to Hailey and her family, our team, the good folks at Northville Central Schools and our community."

Beyond the disturbing nature of the incident, Zullo is a member of the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. His career spanned decades and included a state championship coaching boys at Shenendehowa High in 1987. Coming out of retirement to coach at Northville Central, at his late wife's behest, who was also battling cancer, he reportedly returned to coaching to provide guidance to young athletes. His wife passed during the 2023-24 season, a time he reflected upon with gratitude for the opportunity to coach. "I am super proud of every one of these young women and what they accomplished. I know each of them will go on to do great things and I wish them well," he told reporters in a statement included on CBS News New York.

While Zullo's future in coaching is uncertain, Northville Central School District has made it clear that this type of behavior by the coach of the Girls’ Varsity basketball team does not align with the values the school upholds. On social media, the District conveyed its commitment to maintaining a respectful and dignified environment, announcing that Zullo will no longer be coaching for the Northville Central School District, confirmed by the District last Saturday as per NBC News.

The well-being of students has come to the forefront, with the school district's board of education staying tight-lipped except for a short statement. Board President Carolyn Wilcox noted via email, “This is now a personnel matter,” emphasizing their attention is currently focused on supporting the athletes during this tumultuous period, referencing a communication obtained by NBC News.
