A 23-year-old man was robbed at knifepoint and beaten by two attackers on the southbound 1 train platform at the West 137th Street station in Hamilton Heights on Friday afternoon, according to police. The victim was standing on the platform at around 2:20 p.m. when two unidentified individuals approached him, displayed a knife, and forcibly took his wallet, which held approximately $200.
According to NYPD Crime Stoppers, the pair then punched and kicked the victim before running off on foot to parts unknown. The victim sustained minor injuries but refused medical attention at the scene, per the same post. Investigators have not released descriptions of the two suspects, and it remains unclear whether station cameras captured usable footage of the men or which route they used to escape to street level.
Robbery Charges Carry Steep Penalties
Under New York law, forcibly stealing property while displaying a weapon like a knife can constitute Robbery in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony that carries a mandatory sentence of five to 25 years in state prison, according to Justia. This is not the first violent incident tied to the same platform. In July 2022, the station was the site of a fatal stabbing on the northbound 1 train platform involving 14-year-old Ethan Reyes, though manslaughter charges against a 15-year-old suspect were later dropped on self-defense grounds after the Manhattan District Attorney's office cited video evidence showing the deceased had escalated the confrontation, according to Yonkers Newswire.
