The debate around the proposed public safety academy in Queens intensifies as New York City's mayoral race heats up. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams staunchly defends the $250 million project against criticism from mayoral contenders, who view it as a misallocation of funds amid pressing recruitment and retention challenges within the NYPD. According to CBS News, rivals claim the academy wouldn't contribute to retaining or expanding the police force and would instead serve as a financial sinkhole.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, currently a frontrunner in the mayoral race, proposed reallocating half the billion-dollar overtime budget toward hiring new officers while designating the remaining funds for education and job training. In contrast, Mayor Adams highlighted that “These are capital dollars, they cannot be used for retention,” and can only be put to use in capital expenses. According to The New York Post, Adams emphasized that the new facility's utility would bring together multiple city agencies for public safety training, a move he believes is more efficient and economical in the long run.
Adams’ plan has garnered criticism from within his party, with several Democratic mayoral candidates labeling the complex, colloquially termed "Cop City," as yet another extravagant venture. State Sen. Jessica Ramos (D-Queens) dubbed it, “It’s another Eric Adams boondoggle of taxpayer dollars.” In a statement obtained by The New York Post, Adams dismissed opponents, decrying their lack of understanding in capital fund appropriation and the distinct nature of budgeting for capital vs. operational costs.
Adding to the political endorsement battles leading up to primary day, Rep. Gregory Meeks backed Cuomo yesterday. Meeks' support introduces a significant dynamic, given his stature as a high-ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and chair of the Queens County Democratic Party. The New York Working Families Party has also put its weight behind four other candidates, steering clear of Adams and Cuomo, according to a statement obtained by CBS News.
