Oklahoma City's historic Britton District is celebrating its resurgence with a $6.6 million facelift; the community is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 27, led by Mayor David Holt, who's excited about the district's revival since its heyday when it thrived as an independent town. Now enhanced with improved streetscapes, sidewalks, and bike lanes, the area breathes new life aimed at increasing walkability and safety while maintaining its character, as reported by the City of Oklahoma City's official news release.
But the celebrations don't end at a mere snip of the ribbon; on March 29, the District Day Fest takes over from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., complete with a one-mile Food and Fun Run that challenges participants to enjoy delicious local fare every quarter mile, live music to jive to, a bustling vendor market, and street entertainment that promises to entice participants of all ages. It's an occasion marking more than just upgraded infrastructure, it's a day-long embrace of a community's spirit and tenacity, a festival that's open for everyone, that includes a one-mile Food and Fun Run with food and drink stations, live music, a vendor market, street entertainment and activities designed to engage all community members who want to join in on the fun.
The long-awaited project, fueled by the dedicated input of local property owners, sought to create a main street environment befitting the 16,000 cars that pass through daily. The successful implementation of the enhancements—unfolding along Britton Road between Western Avenue and Classen Boulevard—now pave the way for a safer and more aesthetically pleasing district.
In the words of Oklahoma City's Mayor David Holt: "The revitalization of the historic Britton District is something I’ve been excited about since taking office," capturing the essence of the shared ambition and drive behind the project, and even though the project wasn't in immediate plans seven years ago, city officials found a way to support the local efforts, as Mayor Holt explained in a testimonial captured by the City of Oklahoma City's news release, the Britton District's time is now, and we needed to be a partner right now, for more information and to register for the fun run, community members can visit brittondistrictokc.org and click on the events tab.
