Oklahoma's senior citizens could be looking at a reduction in their property taxes if a recent Senate bill makes it through the legislative wringer. On Tuesday, Senate Bill 1114, backed by Sen. Tom Woods, passed the Oklahoma Senate, inching closer to a vote that would decide its fate. If implemented, the bill would present a constitutional amendment that gifts a property tax credit to homeowners above 65 who meet certain valuation limits on their property's fair cash value.
While serving as a testament to the financial insecurity felt by many an older Oklahoman, the bill aims to serve as a bulwark against escalating property taxes that have thrust some into the position of abandoning their lifelong homes. "My goal with this bill is to protect Oklahomans over 65, especially retirees, and ensure their property taxes remain stable through a true senior tax freeze," Woods said, according to a statement obtained by the Oklahoma Senate. This credit would essentially freeze the property tax bill at the level it was the year the homeowner first qualified for the program.
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for further scrutiny, where Representative Chris Kannady, R-Oklahoma City, champions as the principal author. If the House finds the bill favorable, it won't be until November 2026 before Oklahoma's voters cast their ballots on the matter – deciding whether the tax credit becomes a financial pillar for the state's senior citizens.
