As the May 7 deadline looms for travelers to present a REAL ID or equivalent for domestic flights, the Oregon DMV is stepping up to offer solutions for residents in need of the upgraded identification. According to a recent announcement from the DMV, increased demand is evident, particularly in densely populated locations, prompting the addition of more REAL ID appointments and the deployment of staff from the Salem headquarters to assist at various offices.
As a guide for Oregonians considering the REAL ID, the DMV suggests checking for a star in the upper right corner of your driver's license, which indicates a REAL ID. Travelers with a passport or other federally accepted ID may not need the upgrade, and those not flying soon could wait until their current credential expires. Real ID appointments are optional, given that DMV offices still accept walk-ins, though wait times may be longer, and new appointments are released daily. Amy Joyce, DMV Administrator, also reminded residents, "The fact is not everyone needs a REAL ID on May 7 -- and in some cases might not ever need one," as stated in the DMV bulletin.
For those seeking the REAL ID, the DMV requires specific documents: one proof of identity, two proofs of home address from different sources, proof of lawful U.S. status, and your Social Security number or proof of ineligibility. A helpful documents guide is available online to prep for appointments, and self-check-in stations at most offices aim to streamline the process. Additionally, mobile alerts are an option at busier locations, permitting customers to come back when their number is near.
To avoid travel disruptions from REAL ID requirements starting May 7, the DMV recommends applying early, as it can take up to three weeks to receive the card. For a flight on May 7, apply by April 16. Those needing services beyond REAL ID can use DMV2U or visit one of 10 express kiosks. Joyce confirmed that REAL IDs will continue to be issued after May 7. Since Oregon's REAL ID launch in July 2020, 35% of 3.7 million credential holders have adopted it.
