Willets Point, a Queens neighborhood known for its industrious spirit and dense collection of auto repair shops, became the nexus of a ferocious fire yesterday afternoon. Flames erupted at an auto body shop on 36th Avenue, according to NBC New York, triggering a three-alarm response from the FDNY. More than 130 firefighters rushed to combat the blaze, which seemed to stubbornly resist their efforts, producing a giant plume of black smoke visible for miles.
The fire, first noticed around 4:30 p.m., tore through the structure with such intensity that it managed to quickly draw the city's attention. As reported by ABC 7 New York, the fire had been brought under control not long after it started. This ensured the safety of the neighborhood, despite the initial threat posed by the thick smoke and towering flames.
FDNY officials confirmed that one firefighter sustained minor injuries while engaging with the powerful inferno. However, details surrounding the nature of the injuries and the firefighter's current condition were not immediately disclosed. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, with fire marshals actively investigating to uncover what sparked the destructive event.
The fire was eventually declared under control, according to the FDNY, with the action winding down just after 6 p.m.
