A serious incident occurred on the evening of March 2 when an unidentified adult male pedestrian was hit by a vehicle in Oxnard. The Oxnard Police Department reported that the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on the 1600 block of East Gonzales Road, near the Rose Ranch Shopping Center. The pedestrian, whose identity remains unknown, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center in critical condition.
According to the police, a burgundy Nissan Sentra, driven by 61-year-old Oxnard resident Martin Mercado, struck the pedestrian while heading eastbound on Gonzales Road towards Rose Avenue. The victim was crossing the road outside of a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. Mercado stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. At this time, neither excessive speed nor impairment by alcohol or drugs appear as factors in the incident.
