The City of Phoenix has been recognized as a finalist for the Innovative Chilled Drinking Water in Public Spaces Initiative in the 2025 IDC Smart Cities North America Awards, according to a recent press release. The initiative, which took off in January this year, has been lauded for proactively meeting the community's need for accessible, chilled drinking water, particularly in densely populated areas serving pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport commuters.
The project, a collaborative effort with Downtown Phoenix, Inc., has seen the installation of three high-tech drinking water stations complete with bottle fillers at strategic locations: Phoenix City Hall entrance, near the Phoenix City Council Chambers, and along the Sonoran Bicycle pathway. Despite the extreme summer heat these stations face, they have been designed with heat-mitigating technologies. They are equipped with remote-sensing and leak detection systems, for optimal performance, seven days a week.
As pointed out in the City of Phoenix's news release, these units have already proved their worth by distributing the equivalent of more than 116,000 average-sized bottles of water to residents and visitors while also reducing the dependency on single-use plastics. This success marks Phoenix's significant stride toward environmental sustainability and conservation of resources.
Ruthbea Yesner, vice president of IDC Government Insights, praised the advances made by organizations across North America stating, "Every year, we see more advancement in the types of technologies and projects deployed, and it is a privilege to celebrate all of this year's applicants," as stated by the City of Phoenix. Indeed, the ingenuity being displayed in the public sector is bringing about a new wave of services that deeply consider the experience of citizens and visitors alike. The IDC's 2025 Smart Cities North America Awards will be formally presented at the upcoming Smart Cities Connect conference taking place in mid-April in San Antonio, TX.
