
A resident of Pittsburgh, James Taric Byrd, 46, has been sentenced to an additional nine years and two months of prison time for assaulting his attorney and for contempt of court. As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, this sentence is to run consecutively with Byrd's current life sentence for drug and firearms crimes.
Byrd's violent outburst occurred on July 18, 2022, within the walls of the Joseph F. Weis Jr. U.S. Courthouse when he struck his attorney during federal criminal trial proceedings according to what the court heard throughout these unusual legal proceedings Byrd was already serving time from other cases including a life sentence from 2023 after being found guilty of firearms and narcotics charges. In 2024 he received yet another conviction for rape and additional charges in Allegheny County. This latest sentencing is partly in response to that courtroom assault.
"This defendant's vicious attack upon his court-appointed defense attorney within the walls of the Joseph F. Weis Jr. U.S. Courthouse was an assault upon the rule of law," Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti emphasized in a statement detailing the gravity of Byrd's actions. Byrd's actions provoked a swift and professional response from the United States Marshals, and their role in the matter has been recognized by the Acting U.S. Attorney.
During sentencing, Judge Robert J. Colville took into account the defendant's extensive criminal history and the impact on the victim, before he imparted a sentence this particular sentence was observed to help mitigate the risk of similar future transgressions by Byrd or any like-minded individuals, "The substantial, consecutive sentence here mirrors the severity of his conduct," Acting U.S. Attorney Rivetti conveyed, the investigation leading to Byrd's prosecution was a combined effort of the United States Marshals Service and Allegheny County Police.
