The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is disrupting the routine for residents who rely on the Plaquemine/Sunshine Ferry for their daily crossings. As of this past Friday, one of Plaquemine's two ferries has been reassigned to Cameron Parish, leaving locals with a single ferry and adjusted schedules.
The ferry moving to Cameron Parish is serving as a temporary replacement for a vessel undergoing repairs, according to an official announcement by the DOTD. As a result, the Plaquemine/Sunshine Ferry service schedules have been adjusted to the following: Monday through Friday from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., for the duration of the Cameron ferry's repairs.
Commuters relying on the ferry may need to adjust their daily schedules. Travelers are encouraged to consider alternative routes or modify their travel times to accommodate the changes.
There is no confirmed timeline for when the relocated ferry will return to Plaquemine or when full services will resume. The temporary reassignment reflects the ongoing challenge of balancing public service with infrastructure maintenance, which affects communities along Louisiana's waterways.
