Portland commuters, prepare for a jigsaw of construction around NE/SE 82nd Avenue. Several active work zones with lane closures and detours will be initiated by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) in the coming fortnight. Road users are advised by PBOT to navigate these changes with caution, heeding signage, and traffic control measures.
Lane closures due to underground electrical trenching and sidewalk renovations are slated for NE Milton to Fremont and NE Siskiyou, while additional groundwork demands attention near NE Russell to Brazee and NE Sacramento to Eugene. At SE Harrison to Division, signal foundation and sidewalk work will necessitate lane reductions. Moreover, during Portland Public School's Spring Break, from March 21 - 28, significant activity is planned around McDaniel High School Entrance, requiring temporary traffic control.
SE Woodward, not to be excluded, is facing a side street closure west of 82nd Avenue due to underground electrical operations, affecting not just the vehicles but also the pedestrians, who will be rerouted around such zones. To assuage access concerns, an alternative driveway is being constructed for Fubonn Shopping Center, linking SE 85th Avenue eastward. In addition, transient sump testing will sporadically disrupt traffic along the avenue. Businesses, amidst this disarray, continue their welcome for patrons.
The landscape of 82nd Avenue is in for a transformation as well, with tree and landscaping removals scheduled for later this month by PBOT contractors. A diversity of trees will fall victim to construction exertions, destined to be supplanted in 2026 fall by 175 new saplings, as per the official announcement. Ranging from Planetrees to Oaks to Ponderosa Pines, these future residents are promised regular upkeep for five years, ensuring they mature righteously in their new urban homes.
The entire effort is part of the larger 82nd Avenue Major Maintenance project, encompassing the stretch from Fremont to Tillamook streets and SE Mill Street to Foster Road. PBOT assures that despite the renovations, businesses along the avenue stand ready to serve customers. These developments look to bolster the infrastructure of the locality and, eventually, nurture a vibrant, canopied urban corridor.
