A 27-year-old driver in Potomac, Maryland, had a narrow escape when a tree fell onto his Jeep amid powerful winds yesterday afternoon. Emergency responders praised the driver's quick thinking after getting out of the vehicle and providing life-saving medical care. "He escaped death by inches," medics at the scene said in a statement detailed by WUSA 9. The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) arrived shortly after the self-rescue to offer advanced care, and the driver was transported to a hospital with traumatic injuries.
The incident occurred on River Road between Newbridge Drive and Persimmon Tree Road, where a massive tree fell during the storm, trapping the truck with force. Reports from FOX 5 DC described wind gusts exceeding 40 mph that also resulted in snapped utility poles, although damage was contained as the power lines were not live.
Despite the severity of the crash, the driver's injuries were said to be non-life-threatening. Montgomery County police confirmed that he is recovering in a local hospital.
