The City of Peoria Council is setting the stage for a couple of years of increased costs in commercial waste disposal. According to the City of Peoria, there's a hearing lined up on May 20, 2025, where the council plans to discuss and potentially adopt new commercial solid waste rates for fiscal years 2026 and 2027.

The meeting will be public, allowing for community input, and is scheduled to take place at the City Council Chambers at 8401 W. Monroe Street. It's an evening setup, kicking off at 6:00 p.m. Rate increases, while not set in stone, are being recommended across the board by city staff.

The proposed bump-up for FY 2026 includes a 2.15% increase for front-load services and a more significant 10.0% for side-load services. Recycling rates may see a 5.75% hike, and various other services, from compactors to roll-offs, are looking at increases ranging from 2.15% to 2.40%. FY 2027 doesn't offer much respite either, with rates continuing to climb, albeit at a slightly slower pace with front-load services seeing a 2.00% increase and side-load, as well as other services varying between 2.00% and 8.00%.

Business owners in Peoria will need to account for these changes in their budgets. This sort of financial modeling is critical for small businesses that rely on tight margins to stay afloat, and, with the ripple effect of increased disposal costs, the community may feel the pinch in the form of secondary price increases on goods and services.

The city has made it clear that nothing is final until the council vote on May 20, but businesses and residents alike would do well to attend the hearing or at least stay informed on the outcome.
