A Queens man, Atikur Razzaque, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison following a guilty plea on charges of alien smuggling and conspiracy to commit alien smuggling. The announcement, detailed in a press release by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York, reports Razzaque's admission to smuggling three Bangladeshi nationals across the northern U.S. border near Westville, New York, on September 21, 2024.
According to the announcement, the United States Border Patrol, specifically the Swanton Sector headed by Chief Border Patrol Agent Robert N. Garcia, conducted the investigation that led to Razzaque's conviction. Arrested at the age of 28, Razzaque has also confessed to having been involved in additional instances of alien smuggling, marking him a repeat offender in the eyes of federal law enforcement.
United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III emphasized the seriousness of these offenses. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Paulbeck, who handled the prosecution, has not provided specific details regarding the conditions of the smuggling operation or the individuals who were smuggled. However, the guilty plea has elucidated Razzaque's role in facilitating the illegal entry of foreign nationals into the country for financial gain.
While serving his sentence, Razzaque will likely face further scrutiny and possible additional penalties if further unlawful activities are uncovered. During his journey to the northern border, Razzaque committed the act of smuggling aliens that landed him a recent prison sentence.
