The Big Ridge Fire in Rabun County continues to challenge firefighters due to dry weather and high winds. Officials reported that northeast winds and low humidity have caused the fire to surpass initial control measures. Firefighters are working to expand containment lines and secure areas from Rabun Bald to Saltrock Gap on the north side, with a potential strategic firing operation, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Firefighters have managed to prevent the fire from reaching the city of Sky Valley. "Our goal had been to get some containment lines in to secure Sky Valley from the fire, and we accomplished that burnout and it held and that line is now secure in that area," James Wettstead, an information officer for the U.S. Forest Service, told accessWDUN. The fire has shifted southward, avoiding populated areas, but has already burned more than 1,000 acres.
As control lines are strengthened, visibility of smoke and air quality impacts may affect the area. Residents are advised to prepare for significant smoke, especially in Warwoman Valley during nighttime hours. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of northern Georgia, signaling continued high-risk fire conditions, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
No evacuation orders have been issued, but the public is asked to avoid certain trails and recreational areas. The Forest Service has also implemented a campfire ban to reduce the risk of new fires. "We're working on trying to corral that part of the fire. Our focus is on protecting private land and lives, and then we'll worry about the trees a little bit later," Wettstead stated, according to accessWDUN.
The next chance for rain, which could help control the fire, is expected on Sunday. Until then, firefighters continue their efforts to contain the fire.
