Residents and visitors to the Southern New Mexico and West Texas regions are advised to exercise caution this week as weather conditions have prompted alerts from the National Weather Service (NWS) in El Paso, TX. On Sunday, the NWS issued a Red Flag Warning effective from noon until 7 PM MDT due to gusty winds and low humidity, which are ideal for the rapid spread of fires. The areas affected include El Paso County, Hudspeth County, as well as several zones in Southern New Mexico where dry fuels are also present.
As obtained by the National Weather Service, winds will be slightly weaker than Saturday, but still likely to reach critical thresholds and promote rapid fire spread. This alert comes with the advice that any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly, and outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Looking ahead to Tuesday, a Fire Weather Watch has also been put in place from noon to 9 PM MDT for similar conditions, strong winds coupled with low relative humidity and critically dry vegetation, making it a potentially risky period for fires.
Additionally, a High Wind Watch is set for Tuesday afternoon through evening across multiple areas, including Eastern/Central El Paso County and several New Mexico regions. Within the High Wind Watch zones, residents should prepare for possible damaging winds with forecasts predicting gusts up to 65 mph. Such conditions raise concerns over downed trees and power lines with the potential for widespread power outages. High profile vehicles may also experience travel difficulties.
