"Riverdance" celebrated its 30th anniversary at Radio City Music Hall with a special performance, "Riverdance 30: The New Generation," featuring lively Irish step dancing. The iconic troupe has made a momentous return to New York City for the first time in five years, featuring a fresh take on their celebrated performances, which now includes re-imagined choreography set to Bill Whelan's Grammy award-winning score, which he impressively reworked for this new iteration. As ABC7NY reports, Padraic Moyles, the associate director and brand manager of "Riverdance," praised the score, saying, "Bill Whelan's Grammy Award-winning score is timeless. It's incredible, and he redid that score for this version of the show, which is extraordinary."
Bringing a taste of Irish culture to the global stage has led "Riverdance" to perform in over 300 countries, with New York City holding a special place in their hearts. Moyles expressed his enthusiasm about performing at Radio City Music Hall, stating, "This is the most iconic building in the world for anybody to perform in," in a statement to ABC7NY. The new wave of dancers, many of whom have grown up with "Riverdance" as a cultural touchstone, brings a renewed energy and profound respect for the troupe's legacy.
The anniversary celebration also took to the stage at West Herr Auditorium with two performances that showcased the fusion of Irish and international dance and music. Principal dancer and dance captain Fergus Fitzpatrick shared that it had always been his childhood dream to be part of "Riverdance." He described it as a true dream come true to be on the road, touring the world with the show while doing what he loves, according to a RochesterFirst interview. His counterpart, principal dancer Maggie Darlington, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on her past experiences with the show as "surreal" and emphasizing its enduring allure.
The shows are a mix of Irish, tap, and folk dancing, with live music and regular costume changes that all contribute to the dynamic over a two-hour performance. The dedication required to successfully pull off such a spectacle is evident. Anna Mai Fitzpatrick, a dancer in the troupe, stated, "It is a job. But at the end of the day, it's our dream job," in comments made to ABC7NY.
