Rockwood Airport Set for $5 Million Revamp with State and City Funds to Boost Regional EconomySource: Google Street View

The Rockwood Airport is gearing up for a significant upgrade in infrastructure, with a combined $5 million pledged by state and city funds to rejuvenate the facility. As reported by WVLT, Senator Ken Yager (R-Kingston) announced that the state is contributing $4 million to this venture, topping up the City of Rockwood's commitment of $1 million for the project.

This funding, obtained through an amendment to Governor Lee's budget proposal, aims to significantly upgrade and modernize the airport's terminal. The revitalization is set to bolster the facility's capability to adequately serve business-class general aviation aircraft and, according to Yager, to significantly strengthen the regional economy. "I’m grateful to Governor Lee for recognizing the importance of this investment," Yager was quoted, in a statement obtained by WBIR.

Furthermore, the airport's strategic location near Interstate 40 and the city of Oak Ridge is cited as a key advantage. The addition of Flatrock Motorsports' new facility is expected to also increase airport usage. Yager highlighted this point, telling WBIR, "With the addition of Flatrock Motorsports’ world-class racing facility and its increased use of the airport, this project is timely and transformative for the area."

Rockwood Mayor Jason Jolly expressed his city's excitement and optimism concerning the planned improvements. "This funding is a game-changer for Rockwood. A new terminal will improve service, attract investment, and support our community for years to come," Jolly stated, according to WVLT. The new budgetary measures will now proceed through legislative channels, with hopes pinned on approval sometime in the next month.
