San Antonio residents looking to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste will get a chance to do just that at an upcoming event. The City of San Antonio’s Solid Waste Management Department is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) event tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon. It will take place at the Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium, located at 5757 US-90, 78227, according to information provided on the city's official website.

The event is tailored exclusively to serve SWMD customers, and participants will need to bring a valid picture ID and a copy of a recent CPS Energy invoice showing payment of the environmental fee to get in. Remember, there is no charge to attend. For the safety of everyone, the event staff will be ready to quickly and efficiently remove items from attendees' vehicles. However, certain materials like household garbage, ammunition, fireworks, medications, and bio-hazardous waste are not welcomed.

Those attending should keep all materials in their original containers to minimize risks of spills and exposure. If a container is leaking, the SWMD requests transferring the contents to a leakproof or lined cardboard box, but urges not to mix different materials in the same container or bag. During transportation, place all items in a box in the trunk or truck bed, a measure that's likely to help avoid any accidents on the way to the event.

Participants at the HHW event can bring a range of items, including paint, oil, chemicals, pesticides, batteries, and electronics. There is a limit though — paint and other liquid waste are restricted to five 5-gallon cans or 25 1-gallon cans with a maximum weight of 220 pounds. A technician will be there to unload the HHW materials and to return the containers upon request; however, if materials are brought in a non-approved container, it won't be returned, as stated on the city’s website.

For those unable to make it to the event this weekend, it's to note that the city maintains a permanent HHW drop-off center at 7030 Culebra Road, which is open year-round. More information about the SWMD’s HHW program, including locations, hours, and a complete list of accepted items, can be easily accessed at SARecycles.org.
