In a move that may surprise some residents of San Luis, city officials have chosen not to push forward with a property tax initiative previously slated to be on the ballots this May. The decision, made public on March 6th, came after officials took a closer look at the budget and weighed the community's input. According to an announcement on the city's website, the tax initiative intended to appear in the special election on May 20, 2025, will no longer be considered.
The proposal, which had stirred up conversation among San Luis’s residents, fell by the wayside as the officials voted in favour of seeking alternative ways of balancing the budget. These alternatives could include trimming the fat from non-essential services and deferring some of the city's planned capital projects. "The City of San Luis mayor and council decided not to proceed with the proposed property tax initiative that was scheduled to appear on the ballot for the special election on May 20, 2025," cited the announcement from the city. "This decision was made after careful consideration, adjusting next year’s budget and the community’s feedback."
San Luis prides itself on its commitment to transparency, which presumably played a part in this decision as officials hope to maintain open dialogue with their constituents. In line with this ethos, the city's public affairs office has reached out to residents, encouraging them to remain engaged and to contact the office for more information regarding the decision or potential future initiatives.
The specifics of the budget cuts or which capital projects will be postponed have not been disclosed yet. "The City’s Public Affairs Office encourages the community to engage by contacting us for more information on this decision or to discuss future initiatives," the statement encourages. As for now, the residents of San Luis can at least breathe easy knowing there won't be any new property tax hikes in the immediate future.
