The San Mateo Police Department, to curb the menace of impaired driving, is setting up a DUI checkpoint on Friday, according to a recent announcement. The operation will run from evening to the wee hours, specifically from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., and will take place at the crossing of S. Norfolk Street and Shoreview Avenue. This initiative is part of an ongoing crackdown to ensure that the roads are safe from drivers who might be influenced by alcohol or other substances.
Awareness of the dangers posed by impaired driving seems to resonate deeply with the department, given the choice of location for the checkpoint; it's no random pick but a site selected based on data indicating a higher incidence of crashes linked to such conditions. Reflecting on the initiative's purpose, Traffic Sergeant Nick Ryan told the San Mateo Police Department, "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk, as well as themselves." He pointed out that the intent is to improve traffic safety by lowering the count of impaired drivers actively cruising the streets.
The San Mateo Police Department also shone a light on the broader scope of DUI offenses, iterating that the culprits aren't limited to those who have had one too many drinks. In today's world, impairment might just as likely be due to legally prescribed medications or over-the-counter drugs, which can also diminish one's driving abilities. And let's not forget about marijuana; while its use might be legal in some capacities, hitting the road under its influence is not.
There's also a heavy cost to pay for those caught driving under the influence. A driver slapped with a DUI for the first time can expect to fork out an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, coupled with a suspended license. The checkpoint's funding, aimed at deterring such risky bets, is sponsored by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, thus highlighting multi-agency efforts to keep the roads free of impaired drivers.
