A 17-year-old Elevation High School student has been arrested for allegedly making threats to execute a mass shooting at Seminole High School, Sanford police report. The threats, initially posted online, prompted a swift law enforcement response that culminated in the teenager's arrest on charges of electronic threat of mass shooting.
The Sanford Police Department became aware of the situation after receiving a tip from a Speakout Hotline on Saturday. As detailed by ClickOrlando, the video presented the suspect owning several guns and threatening to conduct the shooting “during lunch, when there is a big group of people and in between classes while people are walking also in the morning.” The adolescent also claimed ties with ISIS, the Bloods gang, and the military.
Authorities located the teen at his home in Sanford and took him into custody without incident, where they discovered extremely realistic Airsoft replicas but no real firearms. In a statement reported by WFTV, Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith emphasized the rapid collaboration between local and federal agencies, remarking that "this fast action and teamwork most likely prevented a tragedy and saved multiple lives."
In response to the threat, school officials at Seminole High School informed the community that, while no actual firearms were discovered, extra security measures would be implemented on campus as a precaution. The school principals sent a message stressing the importance of community vigilance. As cited by ClickOrlando, this is a perfect example of "see something, say something." The message read, "We are thankful to the individual who shared this tip with law enforcement and for our strong partnership with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department and the Sanford Police Department.”
