A tragic collision in Salem Township, Westmoreland County, claimed the life of a school van driver and injured a teenager yesterday morning. According to WPXI, Renee Davis, 60, was driving the school van when it was involved in a multi-vehicle accident near Route 22 and Route 819, around 7:15 a.m.
The crash, which included a tractor-trailer and an SUV, resulted in Route 22's closure in both directions, though the road has since reopened. While there were no students in the school van at the time, the lingering presence of tragedy remains heavy in the air. The Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson, Trooper Steve Limani, remarked in a statement obtained by WTAE, "It's horrible that a woman lost her life. Our hearts go out to her family."
The driver of the third vehicle, an SUV, was identified as a 17-year-old high school student on their way to school. They were transported to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh for evaluation but are expected to be okay. The tractor-trailer’s driver was not injured in the accident.
Dr. Ken Bissell, Superintendent of Greensburg Salem, expressed the district's grief in an interview, stating, "I think anytime that we hear that a school vehicle is in an accident it’s a very stressful situation that children could be involved, the driver, anybody." Furthermore, Davis has worked for DMJ Transportation since August 2023 and is known for her dedication and kindness. In a tribute to Davis, DMJ Transportation conveyed to WPXI, "She was known for her unwavering dedication and care for the students she transported. Her kindness and commitment left a positive mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her."
The Greensburg Salem School District provides counselors to support students and staff affected by the accident. State police are investigating the precise causes and circumstances of the crash. The district and DMJ Transportation are reaching out to Davis' family to offer condolences and assistance through this difficult period.
