San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is upping the ante on energy storage with an approved expansion of their Westside Canal Battery Energy Storage facility in California's Imperial Valley. The expansion, greenlit by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), will see an imposing addition of 100 megawatts (MW) to the already established 131 MW facility.
"The expansion of Westside Canal is a critical step toward strengthening our region’s energy resiliency and advancing California’s clean-energy goals," SDG&E CEO Caroline Winn told San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). This comes in the wake of a concerted effort by SDG&E to broaden its energy storage network, which will provide heightened grid reliability and cost-effective solutions for consumers. By June 2025, upon completion of the titled expansion, the Westside Canal complex is set to hoist an impressive 231 MW of energy storage, making it the largest asset in SDG&E's utility-owned battery storage portfolio.
With additional projects underway in San Diego County, the company's utility-owned battery storage portfolio is anticipated to hit nearly 480 MW of power capacity and over 1.9 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy storage by the end of the year. Alongside bolstering power dependability, Westside Canal makes strides toward positioning the region as a sustainable energy trailblazer. Moreover, SDG&E leverages federal tax credits to enhance energy affordability, with their recent pursuits allowing for a reduction in the average monthly electric delivery bill for the second consecutive year.
The facility’s expansion is pegged to provide four fundamental services as outlined by SDG&E Today: extra generation capacity for peak-demand periods, ancillary services to maintain a steady power supply, energy balancing to maximize efficiency, as well as congestion management to smoothen out power flow. All designed to contribute to a stable and economically-favored grid, these services emphasize SDG&E's commitment to invigorate its infrastructure with safety as a priority.
According to SDG&E, the expanded Westside Canal Battery Energy Storage facility will encompass safety measures by stringent Underwriters Laboratories and National Fire Protection Association (UL/NFPA) standards. Such architecture is set to include emergency stops, lockable disconnects, and safeguards against lightning strikes, reflecting SDG&E's allegiance to harmonizing innovative energy solutions with robust safety protocols.
