Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has raised concerns over a recent House Republican budget resolution that urges an $880 billion reduction in spending on programs like Medicaid. This proposal could significantly affect Arizonans who depend on the state's Medicaid agency, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS), as reported by ABC15. At a roundtable discussion, various healthcare leaders joined Gallego to discuss the potential impacts of these cuts, highlighting issues that could resonate beyond Medicaid recipients to Arizona’s broader population.
During the event, Gallego emphasized the serious implications the cuts could have, stating, "We aren’t trying to scare you," Gallego said. "They have passed a budget where the goal is to cut $880 billion dollars," an amount he believes cannot be reconciled without dramatically slashing Medicaid, as per ABC15. The participants considered the ripple effects this would have, such as hospitals potentially closing and an increase in people using emergency services as their primary care option. A significant portion of the state's population, including over 30% in rural areas, is currently insured through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (Gallego's official Senate page).
House Republicans maintain that the budget does not explicitly call for cuts to Medicaid and that they aren’t planning to reduce benefits. "The President said over and over and over, we're not gonna touch Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. We've made the same commitment," Majority Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said, as he suggested cost savings could come from eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse across federal programs.
Gallego, a long-standing advocate for Medicaid, referenced a grim scenario during the discussion: "hospitals will close, people will lose coverage, and at the end of the day, not just the Medicaid population — because we saw this when we expanded Medicaid — but everyone gets affected, up and down the line," as reported by his Senate website. He also linked the proposed cuts to tax benefits for the wealthy, stating, "Elon Musk and Donald Trump want to cut Medicaid, and they want to cut it to give tax breaks to friends and billionaires." The roundtable echoed Gallego's concerns, suggesting that cut to Medicaid would be felt across the state economy and could exacerbate healthcare costs for all.
In response to the potential threats to Medicaid, Gallego plans to continue his efforts to engage the community and guard access to healthcare by hosting Medicaid town halls across Arizona.
