Seven suspects are now behind bars following a large-scale operation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, netting approximately $4 million in stolen items. According to statements from the Sheriff’s Department, the crackdown was part of an effort to combat the surge of organized retail crime plaguing numerous major retailers in the area. Among the impacted stores were Target, ULTA Beauty, CVS, and Nordstrom. The sting was a collaborative effort, with the Organized Retail Crimes Task Force (ORCTF) working in concert with local law enforcement and federal partners, as KTLA reported.

The investigation focused on "booster crews," groups that have been systematically stealing goods like medications, cosmetics, and high-end merchandise. These items were then moved to locations in Los Angeles and South Gate, where they would be sold through various fencing operations. During the multi-location search warrant operation, not only was merchandise recovered, but also a "large sum of U.S. currency," as per KTLA.

In establishing the ORCTF back in September 2023, the Sheriff's Department aimed to specifically address the growing trend of organized retail theft. The task force, which operates under the Major Crimes Bureau, has demonstrably been able to effectively identify and dismantle these criminal networks. Seventeen retailers have been hit by these thefts, FOX LA noted.

As for the aftermath, the suspects have been booked on charges including organized retail theft, grand theft, and receiving stolen property. The community's support is considered crucial in these efforts, and the Sheriff's Department is openly asking anyone with information regarding the retail crime to reach out to the task force at [email protected] or by calling 562-946-7270, FOX LA detailed.
