Residents of Binghampton in Memphis will soon have better access to health and wellness services as ShelbyCares opens a new location through a collaboration with Customized Veterans Group. Set to open its doors tomorrow, the ShelbyCares Binghampton facility is the latest effort to bring integrated health coaching and mental health support to the community, in line with Shelby County's ongoing initiative to tackle prevalent health issues.

Located at 578 Harrell St., the site will feature a UT Health Science Center-certified health coach on staff five days a week, alongside additional mental health resources, these services will be available to residents at no cost and the official ribbon-cutting ceremony is poised to take place with the attendance of Mayor Lee Harris, Commissioner Henri E. Brooks, community leaders, and residents, shedding light on a proactive stance towards preventive healthcare education.

In a statement released by Shelby County's official website, Mayor Lee Harris expressed optimism about the initiative's expansion, stating "Our ShelbyCares initiative has already made a difference in the health challenges facing our community," and highlighting the tangible benefits observed, such as weight loss, lowered diabetic risk, and improved blood pressure among regular visitors of the existing Westwood location.

Mental health support, especially for veterans, is a strong focus of the new Binghampton branch, with Customized Veterans Group's longstanding commitment to the welfare of this group, and now expanding to serve all residents who choose to engage with the initiative, as Commissioner Henri E. Brooks remarked in a statement released by Shelby County's official website, the new services will not only cater to veterans but any resident "ready to take control of their physical and mental health." This integrative approach is central to achieving health goals, and the ShelbyCares initiative aims to reduce barriers such as accessibility issues and lack of preventive healthcare education.

As heart disease reigns as the number one killer in the community, and a significant portion of adults have not sought primary health care in over a year, ShelbyCares continues to work towards reversing these trends by providing free, convenient access to essential health services, including diabetes management and healthy cooking classes, reinforcing the notion that preventive care is pivotal in extending and enhancing lives within the Shelby County milieu.
