Daytona Beach's spring break revelry took a dangerous turn this past weekend when two 19-year-old men were shot near the boardwalk area, as confirmed by the Daytona Beach Police Department. During the annual influx of tourists and spring breakers, the shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday by the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. Both victims are reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are currently receiving care at Halifax Medical Center, as per FOX 35 Orlando.
Witnesses in the vicinity captured the ensuing panic and flight of the crowd, a video of which was shared. The area, already congested with visitors from different areas, descended into chaos following the shots being fired. With violence on the rise during these seasonal festivities, residents and visitors alike have expressed their concerns and frustrations about safety amidst such gatherings.
The investigation into the incident reveals that there might have been some familiarity between the assailant and the victims. According to the WESH coverage, preliminary evidence suggests the shooting was linked to an unsanctioned "Beach Day" event that all parties involved were believed to have attended. While the exact motive remains under investigation, law enforcement officers from the Daytona Beach Police Department and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office were quick to respond to the scene located near popular landmarks such as the Ocean Walk Vacation Club and Hotel and the iconic Daytona Beach Bandshell.
The Daytona Beach Police Department is seeking cooperation from the public, asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Those with relevant information have been encouraged to contact the Daytona Beach Police Department at (386) 671-5100.
