The District 3 office is charting paths for the youth of Southside San Antonio with the launch of their 12th annual Legacy Leadership Initiative (LLI), according to a news release from the office. The six-month program is designed to hone and shape the leadership skills of young residents, encouraging them to take active roles in their community. With a history of over a decade, the program has been a pivotal stepping stone for countless students aiming to make a mark locally and beyond.

This year's LLI started off with palpable enthusiasm this spring, and not without reason. Involvement in hands-on service projects has already seen the students rolling up their sleeves. As part of their engagement, they will be collaborating with the San Antonio River Authority to carry out a cleanup operation at 6 Mile Creek tomorrow, from 9 a.m. to noon, as mentioned by the City of San Antonio. The Basura Bash event is set to embody their commitment to environmental stewardship and civic duty.

The Legacy Leadership Initiative is more than just ad hoc projects; it's about sustaining growth and development among the youth through varied experiences. Each month, participants are exposed to different facets of the business, government, education, and trades industries. Throughout these activities, students are handed the keys to unlock their full potential while simultaneously forming bonds with mentors and peers. "We are incredibly proud of all the young people who have participated in the District 3 Legacy Leadership Initiative over the past 12 years," District 3 Council member Phyllis Viagran stated in the initial announcement released by the City of San Antonio. Viagran expressed anticipation for the trailblazing impacts the alumni are destined to create in their respective fields.

Previous LLI cohorts have set a high standard, with alumni securing placements at prestigious academic institutions, earning full-ride scholarships to renowned universities like UTSA, working alongside the Department of Defense, and pursuing civil service within the City Council, as proudly highlighted by the Councilwoman. Applications for the next cohort will be available in fall 2025, and potential candidates are encouraged to visit the LLI webpage to learn more about the program's offerings and application process.
