Preparing for the worst, the cities of Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, and Lancaster united for an extensive active shooter training exercise designed to test the mettle of first responders in the Southwest Region. Last Wednesday, at Valley Ridge Park, more than 130 personnel from police, fire departments, and 911 dispatch participated in a full-scale simulated crisis, complete with fake gunmen, staged explosions, and actors playing the roles of both victims and assailants.

Such drills aim to prepare our police, firefighters, and dispatchers to significantly better respond to potential active shooter or attacker events, a sadly necessary component of current public safety training. During this all-day event, participants were thrown into scenarios with the ultimate objective of securing, treating, and managing real emergencies as they unfolded around them. Volunteer actors and city staffers provided authentic dynamics, adding to the high-stakes environment these exercises strive to represent.

According to the City Of Duncanville, the exercise culminated over a year and a half of planning, initiated in August of 2023. Spearheaded by the Southwest Regional Office of Emergency Management, the planning involved representatives from all first responder services across the four cities and regular collaboration to create the most effective training scenarios.

Local Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P.), and Academy Alumni Groups comprised the 53 volunteer actors, while 59 additional staff and volunteers supported the exercise. Their involvement was integral to providing realistic scenarios, ensuring that the region's first responders are as prepared as they can be for the realities they may face in the line of duty.
