In an effort to address the escalating traffic concerns associated with the annual Nights of Lights festival, St. Augustine city leaders have voted to adjust the event's duration. According to News4JAX, this year's celebration will commence on November 15, and conclude on January 11, 2026. This change effectively shortens the festival by eight days, down from the customary 65 days of operation, to a span of 57 days. The decision hopes to not only alleviate traffic but also to balance out the interests of local residents with those of the business community during the festive season.

The Nights of Lights festival has traditionally been a major tourist attraction for St. Augustine, luring in tens of thousands of visitors while simultaneously generating significant traffic issues. Commissioners voted 3 to 2 on Monday to adjust the festival dates, after deliberation and public commentary, Action News Jax reported. This move is expected to help mitigate the gridlock that has previously left some residents effectively trapped in their homes during the event, while at the same time to partially preserve the economic benefits derived from the influx of holiday goers.

Len Weeks, the president of the St. Augustine Business Coalition and a key figure in the creation of the festival 31 years ago, has been vocal in his opposition to reducing the duration of Nights of Lights. "We survive through Nights of Lights, it makes a tremendous difference in our ability to stay in business," Weeks stated, as reported by First Coast News. Despite this stance, Weeks later acknowledged that even if the situation wasn't ideal, it represented a "win-win for everybody."

Throughout the discussions, community members have expressed their thoughts on the matter, with business stakeholders cautioning about potential revenue losses. Irving Kass, owner of the St. George Inn and chairman of the Tourism Development Council, underscored the event's significance for the local economy, pointing out, "I've got 24 employees who rely on Nights of Lights, and it's just a really important event to help the whole community," as covered by News4JAX.
