The St. Johns County Airport Authority is embroiled in a controversy following claims of Sunshine Law violations and conflicts of interest among its board members. Allegations against Board Chairman Reba Ludlow and board member Len Tucker were discussed during a recent meeting of the Airport Authority Board. The contentious discussions centered on a letter from the Douglas Law Firm, which has opted to step down from its position as the Airport’s legal counsel due to the said allegations, as reported by News4Jax.
During the meeting, it was Reba Ludlow who decided against recusing herself from the vote on whether to conduct an internal investigation into the matter, despite facing charges herself, according to ActionNewsJax. "I am not recusing myself, because nobody told me I was a pink elephant, so just because somebody says something, I am not taking it," Ludlow stated. Her decision ultimately resulted in a tied vote, effectively blocking the motion for an investigation.
As tension filled the room, drawn by the spectacle were community members who attended the lengthy meeting, where the debate toggled back and forth. Tucker, on the other hand, did recuse himself from the vote, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate. A community member voiced during the proceedings, asserting the importance of democracy and the role of the state attorney, as per First Coast News. "Let the democracy work," the individual insisted, suggesting that the state attorney should handle the investigation.
The underpinning of these allegations is a document penned on Feb. 20 from Douglas Law Firm, highlighting a "pattern of violations of Florida Sunshine Law, failure to disclose conflicts of interest and other ethical violations" by both Ludlow and Tucker, as reported by First Coast News.
