Over a century ago, tragedy struck the St. Johns County community when Deputy Guy White and citizen Abraham “Abe” Schneider met their untimely demise at the hands of lawless men. On March 5, 1911, they were shot and killed following an altercation with four Bradford County individuals who had vandalized a train. The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office took to social media yesterday to honor the memory of the fallen deputy and local hero, detailing the events that led to their passing and the awards established in their names.
According to the post made by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, Deputy White was in the process of arresting the men for disorderly conduct and illegally transporting a weapon when one of them produced a firearm, leading to the fatal shooting. This act of violence not only claimed the lives of White and Schneider but also deeply scarred the community they served.
In remembering their sacrifice, St. Johns County Sheriff's Office has established two prestigious awards. The Deputy Guy White Award, designated as the "Deputy of the Year" award, is presented to a deputy exemplifying outstanding performance in their duties. The Abe Schneider Award acknowledges those unsworn individuals from the community, including reserve deputies, part-time personnel, and volunteers who have displayed remarkable courage when facing personal danger, especially in instances where they rendered aid to law enforcement or fellow citizens.
The awards, symbolic of selfless service and bravery, not only cement the legacy of White and Schneider but also inspire acts of valor in today's society. Annually, recipients of these accolades demonstrate the same dedication and sacrifice that White and Schneider exhibited over a hundred years ago.
