Residents of St. Johns in Apache County can breathe a sigh of relief as evacuation orders have been lifted following a brush fire that extended across 70 acres. The fire, which prompted a “GO” evacuation order for those on Water Street and nearby vicinities, was halted in its tracks as firefighters managed to stop its forward progression, as reported by AZ Family. Despite the good news, local authorities continue to warn residents of heightened fire danger due to current dry weather conditions.
In a post shared by Apache County Emergency Management and Preparedness, concerned residents were informed that "if active fire in seen in the burn area, call non-emergency dispatch at (928)337-4321 option 6." With the blaze threatening the community, the St. Johns EMS and Fire Department, alongside multiple other agencies, collaborated to bring the situation under control. Various responding agencies included Vernon Fire, Concho Fire, and State Forestry, according to a release shared by FOX 10 Phoenix.
During firefighting efforts, public cooperation was crucial. Warnings like "IF YOU ARE SEEN GOING AROUND POLICE BARRICADES, YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO CITATION" were shared on social media to ensure the safety of first responders and the public, as noted by FOX 10 Phoenix. Apache County officials offer the Smart911 system for emergency notifications, emphasizing the importance of timely updates and instructions for community safety.
As the fire's progress was stopped, the community's vigilance remains a standing order. With the persistence of strong winds, fire crews worked unwaveringly through the night, monitoring conditions in case future evacuations became necessary. Meanwhile, residents were reminded of the 5 P's of Evacuation – People and Pets, Prescriptions, Papers, Personal Needs, and Priceless items – a guide for preparedness captured by FOX 10 Phoenix. As the county remains on READY status year-round, the focus is as much on recovery as it is on the relentless preparation for the next emergency.
