The incident began around 12:44 p.m. yesterday and prompted a large response from law enforcement and emergency services, according to CBS News.
Neighborhood residents expressed their shock upon witnessing the heavy police presence. "You walked out, there’s a whole SWAT team here, there were snipers out here. It looked like something you see on TV," said Kristi Haywood, a neighbor, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office managed the incident with assistance from other agencies, ushering the man from his balcony and extinguishing the apartment fire, which had originated from within the barricaded unit.
Critical concerns around the man's wellbeing were highlighted by Commander Eugene Rush of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. "We don’t know. We don’t have that information at this time, and we’re investigating it. But we did know that he had some mental health concerns," Rush told ClickOnDetroit. The crisis negotiation team's attempts to communicate with the man were unsuccessful, leading to the decision to intervene directly as the fire risk increased.
Public safety notifications were issued during the incident, but some residents expressed frustration over the communication breakdown, "You panic, you get scared. And I’m pretty tough. There has to be a better way of informing people," said another local, Karen Senior, highlighting the failure of the alert system to reach all residents.
