Sterling Heights has introduced its first Comprehensive Transportation Safety Action Plan, with the goal of reducing traffic deaths and serious accidents by 2050. According to the city's official announcement, the plan, approved at Monday's City Council Meeting, includes the establishment of a Traffic Calming Program to address issues such as speeding and hazardous driving.
The Traffic Calming Program involves city administrators, consultants (collectively known as the Traffic Calming Task Force), and the local community to identify high-risk areas and determine appropriate solutions. Mayor Michael Taylor remarked, "Our goal is to make Sterling Heights a model city for roadway safety, ensuring that everyone—whether they are driving, biking, or walking—can move about safely and confidently." The city has invited residents to take an active role through a Traffic Calming Request Form that lets them report their street safety worries, according to the city's announcement.
The new Safety Calming Dashboard on the city's website offers real-time updates on projects based on community input and traffic analysis. According to Interim Police Chief Ken Pappas, the initiative involves collaboration between city leadership, law enforcement, and residents to implement data-driven strategies aimed at improving public safety.
Additionally, the city is focusing on Ryan Road, known for its high-risk crash rate, as part of its comprehensive traffic calming studies. City Engineer Brent Bashaw told the City of Sterling Heights, "The reimagination of Ryan Road is one of our top priorities." By seeking funding and spotlighting safety enhancements, this particular initiative emphasizes how Sterling Heights is at the leading edge of traffic safety innovation, with added efforts like speed cushions, median installations, and visible pedestrian crossings already underway.
With the City Council approving the Transportation Safety Action Plan, Sterling Heights is now in a position to access state and federal grants that could support its efforts toward safer streets. The city's focus on Vision Zero aims to reduce traffic fatalities and promote a safer, more inclusive environment for all types of commuters.
