Stop & Shop and Teamsters Local 25 have reached an agreement to prevent the shutdown of their Freetown distribution center. This development resolves the ongoing concerns between labor and management. As reported by Boston 25 News, a tentative agreement announced yesterday has been made to secure over 900 union jobs with a six-year contract.
The agreement was reached as the deadline to prevent a strike approached, ensuring job security for the Teamsters members at the warehouse. "I am thrilled that we were able to work together on a new contract that both provides an outstanding package of wages and benefits to our associates and supports us in our strategy of improving the customer experience by reducing operating costs," Roger Wheeler, President of Stop & Shop, elucidated in a statement obtained by Boston 25 News.
The details provided by both parties indicate that compromises were made to address both operational and employee needs. According to the union, the new agreement could make the contract one of the strongest in the supermarket industry. As per the official statement released by WHDH, Stop & Shop stated that the deal reduces operating costs while offering a competitive wage package.
