Mayor Mike Johnston jubilantly declared the festival's new residency in Colorado, anticipating it to be a boon for the state. "I am absolutely thrilled to welcome the Sundance Film Festival to Colorado as this cements our state’s place as one of the country’s great art capitals," Mayor Johnston stated, as per City and County of Denver. He pointed out that Denver's notable venues and the burgeoning film community are set to offer the perfect backdrop for Sundance.
With a track record that includes a $132 million economic impact in its former Utah home, the festival's relocation is expected to bring similar, if not greater, prosperity to Colorado. Discussing the widespread regional benefits, in a state where everyone looks forward to the festival in 2027, Governor Jared Polis weighed in. "That’s why the Mayor of Denver was involved, so many others, to really show, yes, it’s rooted in place here in Boulder but it’s the entire state that will benefit and also the entire state that is involved in helping to have a successful festival," Gov. Polis said, as obtained by City and County of Denver.
The festival's previous iteration in Utah also accounted for the creation of 1,700 jobs, $70 million in wages, and $14 million in state and local tax revenue, numbers that Colorado looks to replicate or exceed. The collaboration between multiple entities, such as Visit Boulder, the Boulder Chamber, and Denver Film, signals a united front in maximizing the festival's potential in its new location, and Mayor Johnston's commendations for Governor Polis and other leaders reflect the cooperative spirit driving this significant cultural relocation.
