The City of Sweetwater has just been granted a new title that's sure to put the West Texas locale on more radars. Governor Greg Abbott announced the city’s induction into the Film Friendly Texas program, overseen by the Texas Film Commission as part of its initiative to foster media production in the state, as reported by a government press release.
"Congratulations to Sweetwater on earning the Film Friendly Texas designation and joining more than 175 other Texas communities that have received this recognition,” Governor Abbott conveyed in the press release. The program provides a framework not just for drawing in production companies, but also for engaging local businesses and workforce, essentially casting a broad net for economic benefit. The Governor's excitement about the future collaborations, is palpable, "I look forward to continuing to work alongside all of our communities to ensure they have the knowledge, and tools needed to succeed."
The initiative does more than just add a nifty badge to participating cities; it offers training and guidance on industry standards and how to house film-related activities effectively. Senator Charles Perry, a Sweetwater graduate himself, hailed his hometown's certification, noting in the release that it "showcases Sweetwater’s unique character and economic potential." Likewise, Representative Stan Lambert praised Sweetwater, describing it as a community that "embodies the values that make Texas, Texas." Lambert also expressed his anticipation for Sweetwater to enrich Texas's influence in the film industry, according to the release.
Mayor Jim McKenzie celebrated the achievement for Sweetwater as well, stating, “We appreciate the opportunity to become certified by the Governor, to be officially in the Film Friendly Texas Certified Community program.” He proudly acknowledged another leap forward for the city. And indeed, there is a significant leap to consider; since the program's establishment, the Texas Film Commission has drawn in excess of $2.5 billion in local spending, and created over 189,000 production jobs from 2007 to 2024, the press release detailed.
