Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into allegations that Superior Insurance engaged in illegal surveillance and potential blackmail tactics against lawmakers, journalists, and private citizens with claims against the company. This announcement came following revelations during a public hearing held by the Texas House of Representatives Committee on Delivery of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
During the hearing, CEO Mark Sanders confirmed that Superior Insurance had employed private investigators to keep tabs on individuals, stirring discomfort among committee members. The suspicion is that the insurance giant sought to leverage this information to land state contracts and undermine clients’ insurance claims. According to a press release from the Texas Attorney General's Office, Paxton stated, "The allegations concerning Superior’s actions, such as actions that were characterized as potentially blackmailing lawmakers to secure state contracts and surveilling private citizens to avoid paying legitimate claims, are deeply troubling."
Paxton has made clear his intention to fully investigate the allegations against Superior Insurance. He promised, "I will get to the bottom of this, uncover any illegal activity, and hold bad actors responsible. Justice will be served," as mentioned in the same press release. This strict approach shows the Attorney General's office is taking Superior Insurance's CEO's admissions seriously.
