Just when you thought the construction on the Triangle Expressway couldn't get any more disruptive, the North Carolina Turnpike Authority has announced another schedule of closures that could impact your night-time commute. Specifically, for those who frequent Toll N.C. 540, be prepared for overnight ramp closures at Exits 39 and 43 that will add a kink in your travel plans.
The construction activities stem from the continuation of the Triangle Expressway extension from N.C. 55 Bypass to Interstate 40. According to NCDOT, the closures are set for the nights of March 9 through March 10, with the effected ramps being shut down from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. each evening. Drivers are advised to expect delays and watch for detour signs if traveling in the area.
For those trying to reach N.C. 50/Benson Highway from Toll N.C. 540 Westbound during the closure, there's an official detour that involves continuing west on Toll N.C. 540, taking Exit 43 to Old Stage Road, turning right and then making a right onto Ten Ten Road, which will lead travelers back to N.C. 50/Benson Highway.
The Turnpike Authority is strongly recommending that drivers avoid the area if possible to sidestep the anticipated congestion. For those unable to reroute their late-night drives, the detour should be clearly marked, but caution is recommended due to the increased complexity and potential for confusion these detours may induce. Travelers should pay close attention to the posted detour route, and as always, safety should be the top priority.
