Motorists navigating the roads of Unicoi County on I-26 are in for another adjustment following a necessary shift in response to ongoing bridge construction. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced that effective today, I-26 traffic, previously funneling through a single lane in each direction on the westbound side, will now be directed to newly opened channels on the eastbound side, as reported by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
As these changes take effect to facilitate the building of the new I-26 West bridge, its predecessor has fallen victim to 2024's Hurricane Helene, commuters should note the reopening of the I-26 East exit ramp to Jackson Love Highway (Exit 40), with the stipulation that those aiming to access I-26 West at this junction will instead need to detour to Erwin-Jonesborough (Exit 37). TDOT cautions that while the transition to the I-26 East side proceeds, the westbound exit ramp to Jackson Love Highway will remain functional amidst this ongoing work.
Vehicles wider than 10 feet will continue to be prohibited from this stretch of I-26, maintaining the restriction to ensure safety and efficacy as laborers toil near traffic flows. Provided the weather proves cooperative, this project phase should progress without significant hindrance. Yet, with the unpredictability of nature, drivers are urged to brace themselves for delays and to navigate the zone with heightened caution, keeping an eye out for the workers whose presence is a constant as they rebuild what was lost.
