A tragic incident unfolded at Rodeo Beach in Marin County yesterday when a fisherman lost his life after being swept away by a large wave while fishing from the rocks. According to the CBS News Bay Area report, the Southern Marin Fire Department dispatched units around 3:30 p.m. after receiving distress signals. Rescuers attempted to resuscitate the victim, a man believed to be in his seventies, but he was pronounced dead at the beach.
Initial reports suggested the possible presence of a second victim, which prompted a search operation. Fire officials had to eventually call off the search after carefully reviewing surveillance footage and concluding that the fisherman was alone. This information was later confirmed by a bystander who, according to KTVU, provided credible video evidence of the man fishing solo.
The Southern Marin Fire Deputy Chief, Matt Barnes, detailed that bystanders had initially pulled the fisherman from the water, quickly initiating CPR even before emergency crews arrived. Despite the swift response, the team was unable to revive the victim. Southern Marin Fire Department’s Battalion Chief Jason Golden also confirmed, as reported by KTVU, the unfortunate series of events, including the victim's previous caution to another individual about the treacherous waters.
In response to the ongoing dangers, a Beach Hazard Statement remains in effect through Wednesday morning, as the National Weather Service warned. This advisory cautions against sneaker waves and rip currents, which Meteorologist Mark Tamayo forecasted as presenting 6 to 8 feet wave heights.
