Two separate crashes late Monday night left a woman dead, a man and child critically injured, and several others hospitalized. The first accident occurred near the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Mountain View Road at approximately 11:45 p.m., while the other took place just fifteen minutes earlier around 43rd and Purdue Avenues. Investigations are underway to understand the full scope and cause of both incidents.
Around the fatal crash site, police and firefighters arrived to find three vehicles involved. According to a report by AZFamily, 32-year-old Charlene Quinones lost her life after another motorist collided with her vehicle head-on, an impact that sent her and a child to the hospital, where Quinones was pronounced dead. Two other children received injuries described as non-life-threatening, and two more children were involved in the accident but emerged unscathed, the distress etching a grim outline against the late evening calm.
The Phoenix Fire Department responded to another emergency mere blocks away. The second collision left the driver and a child requiring extrication. "Two people did need to be extricated from their vehicle. A total of three people were transported to the hospital," Capt. Todd Keller said in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. Of those hospitalized, one man and a child remain in critical condition, while another child is in stable condition.
At present, the motives and mechanics of the incidents remain unknown. They have noted that the driver who struck Quinones showed signs of impairment, and charges are pending the outcome of toxicology reports and the accident reconstruction process.
