Two lives were cut short in the quiet expanse of Pickaway County when a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) met its tragic end in the early morning yesterday. The Pickaway County Sheriff's Office confirmed the deaths of 42-year-old Mahlon Riddick and 19-year-old Austin Lucas following a UTV crash that occurred in a field on the 14000 block of Yankeetown Pike, Mt. Sterling. The emergency call came in around 4:25 a.m., as noted in reports from the Pickaway County Sheriff's Office and echoed by local authorities.
The response to the crash site was swift, with units from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and local Tri-County Fire Departments attending to the incident. Both men, sadly, were pronounced dead at the scene. Although details surrounding the cause of the crash remain elusive, the investigation continues to piece together the events that led to this unfortunate event.
"It's unclear what led up to the crash," the Sheriff's office said in a statement obtained by WBNS news, sparking questions within the community about the circumstances that unfolded on that fateful stretch of rural terrain. Additional support was provided by the Harrison Township Fire Department and the Pickaway County Coroner’s Office, according to information shared by NBC4i.
The loss of Riddick and Lucas marks a somber moment for Circleville and New Holland residents—their hometowns—as they mourn together. Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey ensures the public that diligent efforts are underway as the investigation presses on, a sentiment that ABC6 relayed on Your Side. Both families now face an aching void left behind by two individuals whose presence was as tangible as the fields they traversed—an absence felt profoundly in the heart of their community.
