The Troy Police Department has issued a warning after reports surfaced of an individual using a 248 area code, claiming to be a lieutenant and falsely stating money is owed to the department. The police have urged the community to remain vigilant against such deceptive tactics.
The scam, which takes advantage of the trust usually given to those in positions of authority, has led police to advise residents to hang up immediately if they receive such suspicious calls. Describing the con, the department's social media post warned, "This unknown person is stating money is owed to the Troy Police Department. Please do not fall for this scam, JUST HANG UP!" Troy Police Department emphasized the importance of residents' actions to protect themselves.
