On a recent visit to the New York State Capitol in Albany, Tom Homan, President Trump's appointee as "border czar," made his position clear on the state's immigration policies. According to The New York Post, Homan called out Democrats for their support of the pro-immigration "Green Light law" and sanctuary city policies. These comments come amidst a lawsuit filed by US Attorney General Pam Bondi which attempts to force New York to share undocumented migrant data with ICE, a move supported by Republican lawmakers.
Homan's visit underscores an escalation in tensions between federal immigration authorities and New York officials, who maintain sanctuary city policies and have taken a stand with the Green Light law, allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain driver's licenses while restricting federal access to DMV data. Albany Democrats, like Governor Kathy Hochul, have become central figures in the controversy, as they avoid direct engagement with Homan, who during his last visit met with Mayor Eric Adams to discuss FEMA grants and immigration operations at Rikers Island, as reported by FOX 5 New York.
"You're not gonna stop us New York state. You've got to change the sanctuary stairs. If you don't get out of the way, we're going to do our job," Homan declared, according to a statement obtained by FOX 5 New York. His visit coincided with the scheduled deportation hearing of pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, shedding light on the practical implications of the ongoing legal and political skirmishes.
Despite the opposition, Homan expressed support for Mayor Adams, stating, "She [Hochul] goes and tries to fire the mayor, who wants to help me find public safety threats," as told to FOX 5 New York. The border czar has continued to defend and discuss collaboration with Adams while criticizing the governor’s approaches. Amidst this backdrop, the Laken Riley Act, focusing on detainment requirements for unauthorized immigrants involved in theft and violent crimes, remains another point of contention as Homan pushes for policies that would require law enforcement to notify ICE upon any arrest of a non-citizen.
