Last Sunday morning, a shooting occurred near 3rd and K streets in Sacramento’s Downtown Commons, injuring two teenagers. A 17-year-old was critically injured, and an 18-year-old had lesser injuries. Both were taken to a local hospital. The Sacramento Police Department detained two minor suspects and booked them into Juvenile Hall on weapons charges. Officer Anthony Gamble clarified that this incident is unrelated to a previous shooting at 10th and K streets, stating, "It's important to note that those two are separate incidents; 10th and K shooting was a group of people that knew each other and didn't like each other, and they've terrorized our community with that incident. That was an isolated incident. This is another isolated incident. So, there's really no correlation other than the fact that it occurred on K Street." Police are still investigating the relationship between the victims and suspects. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded due to the severity of the 17-year-old's injuries, according to ABC 10.
A recent shooting in the city has raised safety concerns among residents and visitors, especially regarding downtown. However, Gamble reassured the public, stating, "I know a lot of people are going to talk about downtown and safety, right? Is it safe downtown. But just to put things in perspective, last night alone, there were thousands of people that came downtown that enjoyed concerts and restaurants and bars and nightclubs. And they all made it home safely," as reported by FOX40.
The police department works closely with Downtown Commons staff and local businesses, using a network of cameras to help solve cases quickly. Detective Gamble stated, "Anybody that brings a firearm downtown and uses it to shoot somebody, that's a problem," emphasizing the department’s commitment to justice. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives reviewing footage to gather more details. Gamble added, "We're not going to tolerate it. And, if you do that downtown, if you do that in our city, we're going to do everything we can to locate you and bring you to justice," as stated by ABC 10.
